Maribor (pronounced [ˈmaːɾibɔɾ] (listen), is the second-largest city in Slovenia and the largest city of the traditional region of Lower Styria. It is also the seat of the City Municipality of Maribor.
Maribor, along with the Portuguese city of Guimarães, was selected the European Capital of Culture for 2012.
History
Ice hockey in Maribor started in 1947. At the time, there were 2 teams, one named Železničar and the second one Polet. Both joined together in the early 1950s under Železničar banner. Since then, ice hockey in Maribor was played on and off, depending on weather conditions as there was no ice rink until 1974. Maribor senior hockey team was recreated in 1993 and has played in Slovenian championships ever since with the exception of 1999/00 season.
Their most prominent player to date is Jan Muršak, who is currently playing for SC Bern in Swiss-based NLA.
